About Pennsauken Township, NJ

Pennsauken Township is a township located in Camden County, New Jersey. A suburb of the Philadelphia-Camden metro area, Pennsauken Township was incorporated in 1892 from portions of now-defunct Stockton Township. Pennsauken Township is connected to Philadelphia by the Betsy Ross Bridge that crosses the Delaware River. The township is believed to have gotten its name from the word “pindasenauken,” the Lenape language word for “tobacco pouch.” Another theory for the township’s name asserts that “Penn” refers to William Penn, while “sauk” refers to a water inlet/outlet. Pennsauken Township was home to the country’s first drive-in theater, the Camden Drive-In opened in 1933. The township was also home to the Pennsauken Mart, a multi-vendor indoor market that closed in 2006.
